Historical Notes of Interest
1988
The OWCC Foundation, a not-for-profit support organization was established and has
built an endowment in excess of $18 million. The foundation provides more than 300
student scholarships annually in addition to supporting other endeavors that further
the mission of the college.
1987
The Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra of OWCC was established in and is the region's
only orchestra. The NFSO features professional musicians and talented amateurs who
come from across northwest Florida to perform an annual series of concerts.
March 15, 1988
OWJC District Board of Trustees vote to officially change the name of the college
to Okaloosa-Walton Community College
August 17, 1987
OWJC's second president, Dr. James R. Richburg, joins the college

OWCC is a leader in Florida in offering 2 + 2 higher education with the establishment
of a 2+2 program with the University of West Florida.
