Math Pathways

Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) has updated its general education math requirements to better serve students. Following Senate Bill (SB 366), we have developed three math pathways—allowing students to align their math courses to their intended career and, in some cases, reducing their time to degree completion. These changes will be in effect with the Academic Year 2024-2025 catalog or starting in the fall of 2024.

Overview

  1. Mathematical Thinking in Context (MTIC) Pathway – This pathway is intended for students in the broadest range of programs of study. Students will explore a range of mathematical concepts, formulating and solving problems in context.
    • MGF 1130, Mathematical Thinking, is a gateway course for this pathway and satisfies the General Education Core requirement.
    • MGF 1131, Mathematics in Context, is also a gateway course for this pathway but does not satisfy the General Education Core course requirement.
  2. Statistical Reasoning Pathway – Students in this pathway will gain a statistical knowledge foundation in areas such as descriptive statistics, probability, and inferential statistics that will allow them to use and interpret data.
    • STA 2023, Statistics, is the Gateway course that will satisfy the General Education Core math requirement for this pathway.
  3. Algebra to Calculus Pathway – This pathway is for students whose academic program requires a foundation of algebra, which may be followed by a sequence of courses that may lead to calculus.
    • MAC 1105, College Algebra, or MAC 1105C, College Algebra, with Integrated Review satisfy the Core math requirement for this pathway.
      • Students with a PERT score of 114-122 will be placed into MAC 1105C. Students with a PERT score of 123+ will be placed into MAC 1105.
    • MAC 2311 also satisfies the Core math requirement for this pathway, should a student’s placement score place them into this course.

For more details about the appropriate math courses you need to take, view the Math Course Sequence Matrix.

NWFSC Math Requirements

  • A.A. Degrees – Choose one Core Mathematics course and one General Mathematics course, or choose two Core Mathematics courses. The available Core and General Mathematics courses are listed in the Catalog.
  • A.S. Degrees – One General Education Core Mathematics course that aligns with the student’s Program of Study click here for more info. (At least 3 credits.)
  • A.A.S. Degrees – One General Education Core Mathematics course that aligns with the student’s Program of Study click here for more info. (At least 3 credits.)

NWFSC still offers developmental math courses—MAT 0022, Developmental Math Combined, and MAT 0028, Developmental Math II. These courses do not satisfy the General Education Mathematics Core requirement; they prepare students to take the next level course.

Students with a PERT score between 50-95 should take MAT 0022, and students with a PERT score of 96-113 should take MAT 0028. Students who are exempt from placement testing may consult the  and work with a Student Success Navigator to select the appropriate course.

Changes to MAT 1033A

MAT 1033A, Intermediate Algebra, is being removed from the NWFSC curriculum. Instead, we have designed a new, 4-credit accelerated algebra course, “MAC 1105C, College Algebra with Integrated Review.” This course will help students who did not test into MAC 1105, College Algebra, achieve the same outcomes as students in MAC 1105 by the end of the course. MAC 1105C implements a new peer- and embedded-tutoring model that will provide a greater level of support for students.

For students who received a D or F in MAT 1033A, we are offering a number of options:

  • Retake MAT 1033A in summer 2024 for grade replacement
  • Beginning in fall 2024, take MAT 1033A or an equivalent course such as MAT 1033 through Florida Shines and transfer it back to NWFSC for grade replacement.

Use the course registration system to search for a course that will work with your schedule.

FAQs

Which math classes am I required to take?

Students should consult their Program of Study listed in the catalog (or their Degree Works worksheet) to determine their pathway. We encourage you to reach out to Student Success Navigators with any questions.

What if I change my intended program?

It is important to speak with a Student Success Navigator before you change your intended program of study. They will be able to advise you about any changes in math requirements. You may also wish to consult with the program director about possible course substitutions.

I’m transferring in with a different math course. What do I do?

Consult with a Student Success Navigator about possible substitutions.

I’m currently enrolled in MAT 1033A. What do I do?

After completing MAT 1033A with a grade of “C” or better, you may enroll in MAC 1105 this summer or fall. Regardless of your MAT 1033A grade, you may enroll in MAC 1105C, STA 2023, MGF 1130, or MGF 1131 this fall. For grade replacement for MAT 1033A, please see your options under the heading “Changes to MAT 1033A” above.
